Happy Hallowe'en

Primary 4 and 5 pupils have been learning a bit about the history behind Halloween. We designed our own pumpkin carving designs and then in small groups, worked together to come up with a team idea.

Today, we cut, hollowed and carved pumpkins. We kept all of the seeds and pulp to use in our baking and cooking tomorrow. We had to use a lot of teamwork to get them carved.

Expressing Emotions

This afternoon, Primary 4 and 5 pupils were acting our emotions in Drama. 

They then had to act out 3 emotions in their groups using only movement, expression and body language...no sound allowed!

Our special little visitor...

This morning, Primary 4 and 5 were very lucky as we got a visit from Ingrid's Mum and their new puppy! The boys are girls were all smitten by the tiny Chihuahua puppy, Suzi. 

Suzi was very cute and she let us all have a gentle stroke of her. 

Some of us even got to feed her a doggy treat which she seemed to enjoy. 

Thank you Katy and Suzi for visiting us! 

We are sure she will be very happy in her new home.

Stress Ball Madness

Today in class, we were talking about the different ways of managing emotions. 

We started focussing on anger and the different ways of positively dealing with feelings of anger.

One of the pupils suggested squeezing something, so we decided to make our own stress balls. We used balloons and filled them with flour. They were all different shapes and sizes because of the different variety of balloons.

We all had loads of personal strategies for dealing with feeling stressed, upset or angry. These included listening to music, lying down, looking out of the window, walking away to a quiet space and many many more.

We all made a deal at the end to try our hardest to be positive thinkers as we know the way we think impacts on how we feel and how we behave.

Super Science

We had another exciting visit from the Science Festival this afternoon.

They showed us loads of really cool experiments and explained why they were happening.

We then got asked if we thought it was possible to stand on air, which is obviously impossible to do?! Wrong! They inflated 16 balloons and got some of the children to stand on the wooden board set on top of them (hopefully without the balloons popping). First one...

Then two...

Three happy children...

Four getting more worried...

...and then five! All balanced on air! Wow!

DNA and Archaeology

This morning, we had another visit from the Genome Campus as part of the Science Festival.

They were telling us all about our DNA and what archaeologists do to find out as much information as they can about people from the past. 

We even got to have a go at digging in some sand for archaeological items, which was really fun! We had to be really careful and gentle when using the tools.

 Using clues from the items, we were able to work out that the person must have been alive in the Roman time period.

Crazy Kaleidoscope's

This afternoon, we had a visit from Jenny as part of the Science Festival.

She told us all about the invention of kaleidoscopes by David Brewster in 1816.

We then got to make our own! 

The patterns they made were really cool and we loved looking at each others and seeing how different they all were.
