Primary 4-5 went on a trip to the CLAN charity shop in Kirkwall.
We have been learning about sustainability and the importance of the 3 R's - Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.
We each took in some items from home that we could price and sell in the shop. We had a look at the stuff already on the shelves to help us think of suitable prices.
We learnt all about the recycling that CLAN Orkney do. They send around 600 full black bags off to be recycled every 3 months. That is a lot! Some countries in Africa use our recycled materials to make new items they can sell. CLAN cannot test electrical goods before selling them, so they donate them all to Restart Orkney (another local charity). They try to make sure nothing ends up wasted or in landfill.
At the end, we were able to make one small purchase using the money we took from home. The children really enjoyed choosing what they wanted and then paying for it themselves.
We had a quick look in the beautiful CLAN gardens, but because of the rain we didn't play outside for long. Anyone can use these gardens, so hopefully we can visit some time we are in Kirkwall with our families.
Thank you Kayleigh, Karen and Moira at CLAN for a fantastic trip!
We hope to be donating and shopping in CLAN again soon.
