Superb Sports Relief 2018

This morning, the pupils at Orphir did a sport-a-thon challenge. The classes worked together to make sure balls were being passed continuously for one whole hour. Each class took responsibility for 20 minutes to pass, bounce and kick balls around in groups.

We also held a bake sale which helped raise a huge amount of money. We would like to give a massive THANK YOU to all of the people who helped bring in delicious baking for us to sell.

Finally, we held a fancy dress day. Staff and pupils donated money to dress up sporty for the day. What an amazing effort from everyone. We had four certificate winners:

Most Comical

Most Authentic

Most Retro

Most Unusual

The total at the end of the day was an amazing £150! Well done Orphir Primary pupils!

... and I even had a twin for the day, my Mini Orkney Dragon!

Learning to reuse and recycle at CLAN

Primary 4-5 went on a trip to the CLAN charity shop in Kirkwall.
We have been learning about sustainability and the importance of the 3 R's - Reducing, Reusing and Recycling.

We each took in some items from home that we could price and sell in the shop. We had a look at the stuff already on the shelves to help us think of suitable prices.

We learnt all about the recycling that CLAN Orkney do. They send around 600 full black bags off to be recycled every 3 months. That is a lot! Some countries in Africa use our recycled materials to make new items they can sell. CLAN cannot test electrical goods before selling them, so they donate them all to Restart Orkney (another local charity). They try to make sure nothing ends up wasted or in landfill.

At the end, we were able to make one small purchase using the money we took from home. The children really enjoyed choosing what they wanted and then paying for it themselves.

We had a quick look in the beautiful CLAN gardens, but because of the rain we didn't play outside for long. Anyone can use these gardens, so hopefully we can visit some time we are in Kirkwall with our families.

Thank you Kayleigh, Karen and Moira at CLAN for a fantastic trip!
We hope to be donating and shopping in CLAN again soon.

Great Global Warming Experiment

We have been learning about greenhouse gases and their effects on climate change. We did an experiment to represent global warming.

We saw the type of thing that is happening to the Earth, when heat cannot escape back into the atmosphere so easily.

We made predictions as to which environment we thought would melt the ice the quickest and wrote them up as science reports.

The one without the cling film took almost twice the length of time as the one covered in cling film.

Experimenting Water Waste

We tried a classroom experiment to test whether it wasted more or less water brushing our teeth with the tap off instead of leaving it running.

We were shocked to discover the results...

Tap off - 190ml water
Tap left running - 7,200ml water

Please remember not to waste water and turn off the tap whilst you brush your teeth!

h!

Rugby

We've been developing some rugby skills. We got a 3 sessions with John Cairns, the rugby development officer and now we are learning more about the sport in our class P.E.

The girls were lucky and got to attend an all girls rugby afternoon in Kirkwall. Jade Konkel and Helen Nelson, two women who play for Scotland, were there to help with the afternoon. We also met some of the Orkney Dragons. It was great.

Cool Charcoal Creations

Today, the P6-7 class taught us how to create these cool, window style, charcoal creations.

We stuck masking tape on to create our own window design, made clouds and a landscape with the charcoal and lots of smudging, then used a rubber to highlight certain areas of our picture.

Here are some of P4-5's designs...

What do you think? They will be displayed in the school dining hall.
